It is with deep respect and gratitude that we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Tasleem Akhtar Khamisani (1963–2025), a deeply respected colleague, mentor, and friend whose life and work left an indelible mark on Pakistan’s public health landscape. A medical doctor and accomplished public health professional, Dr. Khamisani combined clinical expertise with visionary leadership, dedicating more than three decades to strengthening health systems, advancing equity, and improving the lives of women and children across the country.

Born and raised in Khairpur, Pakistan, Dr. Khamisani earned his MBBS from Chandka Medical College and a Master’s in Public Health (with distinction) from Massey University, New Zealand. His career spanned both national and international organizations, where he led major health programs, system-strengthening initiatives, and humanitarian responses with integrity, humility, and dedication.

Dr. Khamisani’s contributions were vast and enduring. He played a pivotal role in establishing and operationalizing Sindh’s District Health Information System (DHIS) and in the rollout of the Sindh and National Electronic Immunization Registries (EIR), pioneering efforts that transformed how health data is captured and used in Pakistan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the Sukkur regional response with remarkable resolve, setting up the first quarantine camp, establishing a BSL-3 laboratory, and creating Pakistan’s first dedicated COVID-19 ICU. His leadership in these moments reflected not only his technical excellence but also his ethical clarity and steadfast principles.

With over 30 years of leadership in maternal and child health, reproductive health, immunization, health information systems, and disaster response, Dr. Khamisani’s expertise encompassed strategic planning, program implementation, policy advocacy, and capacity building. He also co-authored scientific publications and contributed to national strategies and guidelines that continue to shape Pakistan’s health systems today.

A founding member and trusted Advisor at Grassroots, Dr. Khamisani was known not only for his professional excellence but for his kindness, humility, and unwavering generosity. To his colleagues, he was a mentor and guide; to many, like an elder brother. His vision, compassion, and commitment to service continue to inspire all who have had the privilege to work alongside him.

Dr. Khamisani is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two sons. His legacy of healing and humanity will live on in the countless lives he touched and the systems he helped build.
